To help you recover from dental implant surgery, our oral and maxillofacial surgeons, Dr. Mark Ryser and Dr. Richard Shamo, are happy to provide you with post-operation instructions so you can recover properly and receive the best dental implant results possible.

After your treatment, make sure you bite down gently on the gauze pads that have been applied to the operated areas. It is best to use these to stop the bleeding. When the pad fills, replace it with a new one and apply pressure once again.

When it comes to cleaning the area, do not disturb the sites the first day after treatment. It is best to avoid rinsing your mouth or touching the area. The only recommended cleaning task is brushing your teeth the night of your surgery; however, while brushing, you need to be extremely careful around the surgical sites. If needed, you can rinse your mouth with a saltwater rinse 24 hours after surgery. While rinsing, swish gently and let the water drip into the sink. Do not spit. You can rinse 2-3 times a day.

You can relieve pain and reduce swelling by applying an ice pack on the area for 20 minutes at a time. It is important to ice the area 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off the first 24 hours after surgery. If you were prescribed any medication, please take it as directed.

Finally, it is best to rest as much as possible the first day after your treatment. Lifting, bending, or strenuous activity will increase the bleeding, swelling, and pain, and it can slow the healing process. It is best to avoid exercise 3-4 days following surgery.
